Medication Administration
The Institute of Medicine reported in a study published in
1999 that an estimated 98,000 deaths occurred annually due to
medical errors in U.S. hospitals and that 7,000 of these
deaths involved medication errors. The same study estimated
that the associated economic burden of medication
administration errors was approximately $77 billion. In
addition, results from national surveys of hospital leaders
indicate an increased need for information technology
solutions that address patient safety and reduce errors in
medication administration.
By combining handheld mobile computers, wireless local area
network (WLAN) and bar code technologies with medication
administration applications from leading clinical IT and
medical device partners, we can help ensure the right people
get the right doses at the right time. By using bar code
technology, nurses scan a barcode on a patient’s wrist, and
confirm the time, dosage and prescription at the patient’s
bedside, reducing mistakes and increasing patient safety.
Additional benefits:
- Reduce the possibility of human error by being able to
access the most current data about patients and their
medications
- Avoid second-guessing and bedside redundancies with bar
code technology
- Allow medical professionals to spend more time on
high-value patient care by capturing vitals and charting
treatment information instantaneously with mobile computers
- Save money and time by avoiding costly medical mistakes
- Gain consistency in patient care
